Wave LNG Solutions, Shell sign deal for LNG marine fueling infrastructure

Qatar Petroleum’s (QP) Wave LNG Solutions and Shell Gas & Power Developments (Shell) have signed a framework agreement to develop LNG marine fueling - or bunkering - infrastructure at strategic shipping locations across the globe.

LNG bunkering provides the shipping industry with a new fuel that helps meet the industry’s environmental and economic objectives.

Increasing numbers of ship owners and operators are turning to LNG over traditional marine fuels in response to tighter sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions regulations. In October 2016, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced the introduction of a global 0.5% sulfur cap from 2020.

Promising opportunity

Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, QP president and CEO, said: “We view LNG bunkering as a promising opportunity for LNG to further grow as a clean energy source. LNG demand for bunkering is expected to increase significantly over the coming years and we believe there is real potential for such demand to reach up to 50 million tonnes per annum by 2030.”

Ben van Beurden, Shell CEO, said: “As two of the world’s leading LNG suppliers, Shell and QP have the capability and experience to deliver LNG as a marine fuel to ship owners and operators who must meet tougher emissions regulations from 2020.”

Iran Will Soon Sign South Pars Gas Deal with Total

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zangeneh said a long-delayed gas deal between Tehran and French oil major Total is expected to be signed soon.

“Iran and Total are summing up the discussions on signing the contract for the development of phase 11 of South Pars, and this is almost in the final stages,” Zangeneh was quoted by Shana news agency as saying on Saturday.

“The contract … will be signed before the end of the (current) government (mid-summer),” he added.

On May 27, Total Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne said the oil major would seal the agreement to develop phase 11 of the huge South Pars gas field in southern Iran before summer.

Total signed a heads of agreement with the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) in November 2016 but said earlier in February that a final decision on the deal hinged on the new US administration renewing sanctions waivers on Iran.

The South Pars 11 project will have a production capacity of 1.8 billion cubic feet per day, or 370 000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The produced gas will be fed into Iran’s gas network.

Total will operate the project with a 50.1% interest alongside Petropars at 19.9% and the Chinese state-owned oil and gas company CNPC at 30%.

Qatar backs off from cutting gas supplies

While the current crisis with its neighbours and their backers would be a reason trigger a force majeure clause in the agreement governing the Dolphin gas pipeline, Qatar will not cut supplies to the UAE.

In statements on Sunday, Qatar Petroleum Chief Executive Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi said, “the siege we have today is a force majeure and we could close the gas pipeline to the UAE,” adding he did not want to “harm” the “UAE and the people of the UAE.” Al Kaabi did not rule out a shutdown altogether.

As part of the Dolphin Gas Project, Qatar transports gas to the UAE and Oman via subsea pipelines.
